What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a name for computer systems designed to do tasks that involve patterns, predictions, language, images, decisions, or other kinds of problem-solving. AI can feel impressive, but it is not magic. People design the systems, choose how they are trained, and decide how they should be used.

Those three questions turn a mysterious-looking tool into something you can investigate.

AI vs. a normal computer program

Some programs follow instructions written directly by a programmer. A calculator, for example, can follow exact mathematical rules. Many AI systems are built differently: developers train a model using examples and adjust it so it becomes better at a specific task.

That does not mean a computer learns exactly the way a person learns. In machine learning, “learning” refers to changing a model based on data so it performs a task better.

What is machine learning?

Machine learning is one approach used in AI. Imagine teaching a system to tell two kinds of objects apart. Instead of writing a separate rule for every possible example, developers can provide labeled examples and adjust the model until it recognizes useful patterns.

Models are also tested on examples they did not use during training. The quality and variety of the data matter because missing or unbalanced examples can lead to weaker results.

What is generative AI?

Generative AI creates new outputs such as text, images, audio, or code based on patterns learned during training. A language model uses the context it receives to generate a useful continuation.

Important: An output can sound confident even when it is incomplete or incorrect. A strong user checks important claims and decides whether AI is appropriate for the task.

How can students use AI responsibly?

  • Protect private information. Do not paste sensitive personal information into a tool simply because it accepts input.
  • Check important facts. Verify claims that matter with reliable sources.
  • Look for missing perspectives. Ask whether an answer leaves out important viewpoints or treats people unfairly.
  • Be clear about your own work. Follow your teacher’s or organization’s rules for explaining meaningful AI assistance.

Choose one AI-enabled tool with a parent, guardian, teacher, or mentor when appropriate. Record the input, the output, one thing it did well, one thing you would verify, and one privacy or fairness question.
