Think like a biologist
Biology is the study of living things and the processes that make life possible. Biologists ask questions, collect evidence, compare patterns, and revise explanations when new evidence appears.
Cells are the basic units of life
Most living things are made of cells. A cell membrane controls what enters and leaves. DNA carries genetic instructions. In eukaryotic cells, the nucleus stores most DNA. Mitochondria help release usable energy from food.

Plant and animal cells
Plant cells also have a rigid cell wall and chloroplasts. Chloroplasts capture light energy for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Plants use light energy to build glucose from carbon dioxide and water. This is photosynthesis. Cells can then break down glucose during cellular respiration to release energy in a usable form.
Body systems work together
Body systems are groups of organs that work together. The digestive system breaks food into smaller molecules. The respiratory system exchanges gases. The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes. The nervous system rapidly coordinates information and responses.
Information and interactions
Genes are segments of DNA that can influence traits by providing instructions used by cells. In ecosystems, organisms also interact with one another and with nonliving parts of the environment.
Changes to one population can affect many others, which is why ecologists study networks rather than isolated species.
Build a biology explanation model
Create a model that explains one biological system to a younger learner. Choose a cell, body system, food web, plant process, gene-to-trait pathway, or life cycle.
Your model must include
- At least six correctly defined vocabulary terms.
- A labeled visual or diagram.
- Arrows or notes that show a process or relationship.
- A paragraph explaining one limitation of your model.
- Three questions that could check another student’s understanding.
