Cells: tiny systems doing many jobs
Some living things consist of a single cell, while organisms such as plants, animals, and people are made of many cells working together. A cell contains structures that help it control movement, use genetic information, release usable energy, build molecules, and manage materials.
Cell membrane and nucleus
Cell membrane
The cell membrane surrounds the cell and helps control what enters and leaves. It is better to imagine it as a selective boundary than a completely closed wall.
Nucleus
In eukaryotic cells, the nucleus contains most of the cell’s DNA. It is more accurate to think of the nucleus as a major DNA-storage area than as a tiny “brain” commanding every event.
Mitochondria and ribosomes
Mitochondria
Mitochondria are involved in cellular respiration, processes that help cells release usable energy from food molecules. “Powerhouse of the cell” can be a memory clue, but it is a simplification.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes help build proteins using genetic instructions. Proteins can provide structure, speed up reactions, send signals, and transport materials.
ER, Golgi, and cellular transport
The endoplasmic reticulum, or ER, is a network of membranes involved in making and processing different cellular materials. Rough ER has ribosomes attached; smooth ER has other roles, including lipid-related processes.
The Golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages certain molecules so they can be delivered where they are needed.
What makes plant cells different?
- Cell wall: a rigid layer outside the membrane that provides structure and support.
- Chloroplasts: structures involved in photosynthesis.
- Large central vacuole: stores water and other materials and helps support many plant cells.
Are cell diagrams exact pictures?
No. Diagrams are models. They simplify complicated structures so learners can focus on important relationships. Organelles are not always the exact shape, size, color, or position shown in a textbook.
Build a cell model
Create a labeled plant or animal cell with at least six structures. For each one, write one sentence about its role, then identify one way your model simplifies a real cell.
